An Interview with Michael Mucci.
Tell us something unexpected about yourself!
I have lived all around the world and have traveled to over forty countries. I collect pre-Columbian art and artifacts as well as dinosaur bones. I have a 4 foot dinosaur bone in my garage.
What kind of books do you write?
Mysteries and thrillers.
What inspired you to write?
I have always wanted to. I feel that we all possess both good and bad and that there is a fine line between those elements. I also think that each one of us if put into a certain situation will cross that line. I like to explore that dynamic in my writing.
What makes your writing stand out from the crowd?
I write fiction but base all my writing on true places and events that I have personally experienced or have heard about. I like to explore the humanity in all of my characters and also to expose their flaws.
What is the hardest part of writing – for you?
Finding the time to start, and once I start, actually taking a break.
Where do you like to write – what is your routine?
I like to write in my home office surrounded by artifacts that I have collected, photos of my family and places that I have visited, and books that I love.
What do you do when you are not writing – do you have a day job?
I love to travel. I have been to over 40 countries and love to mix with different cultures. I also love to hike and camp and explore the nature.
Do you work with an outline or just write?
I have an outline I start with but I find that the characters take on a life of their own as they are being written. This sometimes leads them into directions that I had not thought of and is surprising to me.
What advice would you have for other writers?
I really would never give another writer advice, but for me, I concentrate on the story. The story is everything. If you can come up with a good story, then the writing is easy. If the story is not compelling, it does not matter how good or bad the writing is.
How important is marketing and social media for you?
I think we live in a time that social media is key to expanding your audience and making a book commercial. There is no way around it and marketing your writing has become the same as marketing any other product.
